How to Choose the Right Domain Name for Your Business
Published July 23, 2026 · Site Mints Team
Your domain name is often the first and last thing a customer remembers about your business online - it's what they type after a phone call, what's printed on your visiting card, and what shows up in every email you send. A confusing one quietly costs you customers who simply mistype it or forget it. Here's how to pick a good one.
The shorter and more obvious it is, the easier it is for a customer to remember and type correctly
Keep It Short
The shorter your domain, the easier it is to remember, say over the phone, and type correctly on a small screen. If someone has to ask you to repeat or spell it, it's already too long.
Use Your Business Name (When You Can)
The simplest, most reliable choice is your actual business name, exactly as customers already know it. It reinforces your brand instead of introducing a second name people have to learn, and it's what people will guess and type anyway.
Avoid Hyphens, Numbers and Odd Spellings
Hyphens and numbers are a common source of lost customers, not because the domain doesn't work, but because people forget to include them or aren't sure whether it was a hyphen or nothing at all. Clever misspellings (dropping vowels, swapping "4" for "for") look modern but cost you anyone who types it the normal way.
Pick the Right Extension
.com is still the most recognised and trusted extension, and worth taking if it's available. .in is a solid, widely accepted second choice for a business trading mainly within India. Newer extensions (.shop, .store, .online) can work, but they're less instantly familiar, so only use one if your ideal .com or .in is genuinely unavailable.
Check It's Actually Free to Use
Before you fall in love with a name, search it as a registered trademark and check whether a similar, well-known business already uses something close to it. Registering a domain doesn't protect you from a trademark dispute later, and a name too close to an existing brand can create real legal and customer-confusion problems.
Think Beyond Today
Avoid baking a specific product, service, or location into your domain if you might expand later; a business that starts as "puneprinting.com" has a harder time once it opens a second branch in Mumbai. A name tied to your business identity rather than your current offering ages much better.
Getting Your Domain
Once you've decided, register it through your website provider or a registrar directly, ideally in your own name and account, not someone else's. See our guide on domain vs hosting vs website if you're not sure what a domain actually includes. Our Business package includes domain registration (up to ₹999/year) bundled into the price, registered in your name from day one.
