Domain Name vs Website: What’s the Difference?

If you're new to getting your business online, terms like "domain," "hosting" and "website" get thrown around like they mean the same thing. They don't - and understanding the difference will help you avoid paying for the wrong thing, or being confused by a developer's quote.

Domain Name - Your Address

A domain name is the web address people type to find you - like yourbusiness.com. Think of it like the postal address of a shop: it tells people where to find you, but it isn't the shop itself. You "register" a domain for a yearly fee (typically ₹800-1,500/year for a .com), and as long as you keep paying that renewal, it stays yours.

Hosting - The Land the Shop Sits On

Hosting is the server space where your actual website files live. If a domain is the address, hosting is the plot of land the building sits on. Without hosting, your domain just points to an empty address - nothing to see. Hosting is a separate ongoing cost, usually billed yearly.

Website - The Actual Shop

The website is the actual content - pages, design, photos, text - that visitors see when they arrive at your domain, hosted on your server space. This is the part that usually involves the most design and development work.

Putting It Together

So when someone builds you "a website," what you actually need is all three pieces working together:

• A domain registered in your name
• Hosting to store the site's files
• The website itself - the design and content

Some cheap quotes only include the design work and leave you to sort out domain and hosting separately - which can mean unexpected extra costs or, worse, a developer who registers the domain in their own name instead of yours. Always confirm you'll have full ownership and login access to your domain, no matter who builds your site.
