How Google Business Profile Helps Local Businesses

Published July 22, 2026 · Site Mints Team

If you search for almost any local business on Google, before you see a single website in the results, you'll usually see a map with three business listings underneath it: names, star ratings, addresses, "Open now." That's Google Business Profile, and for local businesses it's often the very first thing a customer sees, before they ever click through to a website.

What Google Business Profile Actually Is

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that shows your business on Google Search and Google Maps: your name, category, address, hours, phone number, photos and customer reviews. You claim and manage it directly through your free Google account, and it's separate from your website, though the two work best together.

It's Often the First Thing Customers See

For searches like "electrician near me" or "bakery in [area]," Google typically shows a map with three local listings (the "local pack") above the regular search results. A lot of customers never scroll past this to click through to a website at all; they call, get directions, or message straight from the listing. If you don't have a profile, you simply aren't in that first, most-visible result.

It Builds Trust Through Reviews

Star ratings and review counts are visible right in the search results, before a customer has looked at anything else about your business. A handful of genuine reviews with real ratings does more to build instant trust than almost anything else you can control for free.

It Costs Nothing to Set Up

Unlike ads, a Business Profile listing is free to create and free to appear in local search and Maps results. Your ranking in the local pack depends on relevance, distance and how complete and active your profile is (photos, reviews, posts), not on how much you spend.

It Works Best Alongside a Website

Your Business Profile and your website aren't competing; they do different jobs. The profile is built for a quick, mobile decision (call, get directions, check if you're open). Your website is where someone goes to actually understand your business, see your full range of work, and read details a listing has no room for. Most profiles include a link straight to your website, so a strong one makes your listing even more effective. For a broader look at why a website matters at all, see why small businesses need a website.

Getting Started

  • Search Google for your business name to see if a profile already exists (sometimes Google creates a basic one automatically)
  • Claim or create it at google.com/business and verify it (usually by phone, postcard, or email)
  • Fill in every field: category, hours, service area, phone number, and a link to your website
  • Add real photos of your shop, products or team, not stock images
  • Ask happy customers to leave a review, and reply to the ones you get

None of this requires a developer or a paid tool. If you'd like your website built with your Business Profile in mind (matching name, address and phone details, a clear link back and forth), see our small business websites or get in touch for a free quote.
